With Petite Nature, Stéphanie Garzanti offers us a collection of short, chiselled, offbeat and poetic texts that play with literary genres and the codes of autofiction. Memories of childhood and adolescence mingle with fantastical stories, peacocks eating popcorn, amalgamating characters, cycling, metamorphosis, Virginia Woolf, Monique Wittig and Dalida, and there are dogs and lesbians on every floor. A highly successful and humorous literary debut that questions the act of writing, the power of words and their capacity for emancipation. Publication date: February 1, 2023

A writing workshop
with Stéphanie Garzanti, author
“When it comes to applying new spelling rules, I prefer to keep the old ones. I put circumflexes everywhere and umlauts on letters that aren’t pronounced. I think it’s beautiful and that’s the best reason of all. As for inclusive, non-sexist, degendered, non-binary, post-binary writing… there are no rules, so it’s all up to you!
In Petite nature, which I published in 2023, I experimented with singular forms of writing to recount memories, trials, stories, fantasies… I’ll be using extracts from this publication to enable us to launch into the modest but serious sketch of a written creation. The idea is to imagine a text with a poetic, theoretical, political or novelistic orientation. A text that will originate in our preoccupations and that will attempt to invent a personal and precise form of writing.”
Stéphanie Garzanti
Stéphanie Garzanti studied at the Beaux-arts de Lyon and the École du Magasin in Grenoble. Her drawing work blends reproductions of art-historical works with text-slogans taken from public spaces. Her drawings have been published in Frog, exhibited at the Grant Wahlquist Gallery in Portland and L’Artothèque in Caen, and published as postcards and risographs in bookshops. She also practices experimental and poetic writing, among other things as part of the How To SupPress University Writing workshop, and has read her texts at Bétonsalon in Paris, La Salle de bains in Lyon and on DUUU radio. Her first book, Petite nature, was published in 2023 in the Sorcières collection by Éditions Cambourakis. In 2023, at Bétonsalon, she co-organized Cap pour l’île des vivantxs, a series of survey readings and events around the writing of Monique Wittig.

Performance
by Rose Mahé Cabel, artist, non-binary performer
Weaving mutation is a cycle of installation-performances in which the artist gradually transforms into an arachnid creature. The spider is one of the powers of the threshold, sharing its ambivalence and verticality. It is the mistress of passageways: mischievous and elusive, it is always in between the worlds it connects. Through this figure, the powers of imagination and memory combine. Through its web, it retains all that has been, but also unwinds the infinite skein of possible versions of a story. The spider’s web is an art of entangled co-dependence.
Rose Mahé Cabel
Rose Mahé Cabel’s practices are part of a production of discourse around questions of gender, desire, body and norms – through hybrid performative gestures. Her pieces often use dedication or homage as language. The materials of choice that enable her to slip through the “cracks of our heteropatriarchal-capitalist system” are “glass, wax, make-up, fabric for the creation of moulted costumes and anything derived from medicinal plants.”
Through a cycle entitled Tout va bien, parce que le vide entre nos corps est rose, Rose-Mahé Cabel proposes restorative fictions composed of writings and performances through her alter ego Rose, also a dragqueer.
